Ballyongsa Temple Bronze Bell
반룡사동종 · 盤龍寺銅鍾

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis bell, made in the late Joseon period, is 50cm high and weighs 100 geun, a traditional unit of weight equal to roughly 60 kilograms. The yongnyu, the dragon-shaped hook by which the bell is suspended, is simply made, and the upper part of the bell is decorated with six circles, each inscribed with characters. In the middle, three raised lines in relief give the bell a sense of volume, with further inscriptions above and below them. The lower part of the bell is likewise finished simply, with an inscription and a single raised line. It was cast at Ballyongsa Temple in 1753, the 29th year of King Yeongjo, and clearly shows the simplified characteristics typical of bronze bells of the late Joseon period.
