Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krTaksamjae was built in 1905 by the Confucian community, in accordance with the wishes of the royal court, to honour the virtues of Kim Yu-bu (1549-1621), who went into battle and was renowned for his loyalty and filial piety during the Japanese invasions of Korea, together with Lady Choi and Lady Song, who accompanied the army and died in loyalty to their principles during the Manchu invasion of 1636. The name Taksamjae derives from the two characters 'Taksam', meaning 'eminent in three', bestowed by the state to honour a single family's achievement of the three basic virtues of Confucian society: loyalty (chung), filial piety (hyo) and fidelity (yeol). Taksamjae houses 44 old documents, including royal appointment certificates, along with one wooden stele, two inscribed wooden plaques, and one nokgwon, a certificate of merit awarded by the state. Beside Taksamjae stands Kim Yu-bu's Chunghyogak, a hall commemorating his loyalty and filial piety.
