Seated Rock-carved Buddha on Geumosan Mountain, Hadong
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a Buddha image incised in line on the rock wall of a cave on Geumosan Mountain, in Geumnam-myeon, Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. It is well preserved, and unusually a nine-storey stone pagoda is carved beside the Buddha figure. The facial expression cannot be made out in detail, but a large topknot-shaped bun rises above the head, and the robe drapes down covering both shoulders. The halo is rendered in two parts, distinguishing the body halo from the head halo, and appears simple, with no ornamentation inside it. Depicted as though riding on clouds and bearing the moon on its back while flying across the sky, this rock-carved Buddha is presumed to be a work of the Goryeo period.
