KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The wooden seated Amitabha Buddha of Gaeunsa Temple is currently enshrined in the temple's Mitajeon Hall (Amitabha Hall). According to the production record found inside it, the statue was originally made in the 13th century at Chukbongsa Temple in Asan, South Chungcheong Province. The votive objects discovered inside the statue, including three records of its production and regilding, amount to forty-one items comprising fifty-eight pieces in total. Of these, twenty-five items — the three production and regilding records, seven manuscript copies of the Avatamsaka Sutra, and fifteen printed editions of the Avatamsaka Sutra — were submitted together with the statue for designation as state-designated heritage. The remaining sixteen items were designated as Seoul Tangible Cultural Heritage: one accordion-bound printed sutra, four thread-bound printed sutras, two woodblock-printed sutras, eight printed dharani (Buddhist ritual incantation texts), and one other votive item. The votive contents are as follows: (1) Yeongbogyeong (Scripture of the Numinous Treasure), volume 4; (2) the Treatise on Perfect and Sudden Buddhahood, the Treatise Resolving Doubts through Observing the Hwadu, and the Seonga gwigam (Mirror of Seon); (3) commentary and sub-commentary on the Avatamsaka Sutra, volume 51; (4) the Diamond Sutra with Master Cheollo's annotations, and other texts; (5) an essential commentary on the Amitabha Sutra; (6) the Amitabha Sutra; (7) the Essentials of Attaining Buddhahood and the Sutra of the Pavilion; (8) the dharani of the relic casket containing the whole body of all Tathagatas, with the thirty-seven-deity mandala of the eight-petalled heart-lotus; (9) the great dharani of the wish-fulfilling seal that grants unsurpassed power and fulfils all requests; (10) the dharani of the Womb-Realm mandala; (11) the dharani of the Buddha's crown seal; (12) the seed-syllables of the five elements, and other texts; (13) the dharani of universal bestowal; (14) a circular dharani; (15) a talismanic dharani; (16) other votive objects.
