Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krTwo steles stand side by side in a pine forest on a slope south of Dorisa Temple. The Memorial Stele of Master Ado records the life and achievements of Master Ado. It stands on a natural rock used as a base, with a groove cut into its upper surface to hold the stele, and is capped with a crowning stone. The crowning stone is carved on the front with an imugi (a hornless dragon of legend) and on the back with four dragons, decorated in between with clouds and dragons. On the front of the stele body, the name of the stele is carved horizontally at the top in seal script, with the inscription written vertically below it. On the back is carved the name "Jaunbi" (Stele of Compassionate Clouds), and the date recorded at the end reveals that it was erected in 1655, the sixth year of King Hyojong of Joseon. The Dorisa Bulryangdapsijujil Stele records the names of donors who gave paddies and dry fields to Dorisa Temple, together with the size of the land donated. It too stands on a natural rock base, with a groove cut into the top to hold the stele, and is finished with a crowning stone. The crowning stone is carved on the front and back with thick-lined lotus buds and stems, and its two sides are decorated with a double ring-shaped band. At its top rises a bud-shaped finial. The inscription, carved vertically on the front and back, gives the name of the stele in the first line of the front, followed below by the names of the donors of the land and the size of their donations. The record at the end of the inscription reveals that the stele was erected in 1712, the thirty-eighth year of King Sukjong. Erected between the mid-17th and early 18th century, these two steles are valuable both for the historical significance of their inscriptions and for the skill of their carving.
