Galcheon Village School, Geochang
거창 갈천서당 · 居昌 葛川書堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis village school was built in 1573 by Im Hun (pen name Galcheon), one of the Six Worthies, who served as magistrate of Gwangju during the reign of King Myeongjong of Joseon, together with his younger brother Im Un, to train younger scholars. It was later rebuilt by their descendants in 1878, and is a wooden building with a tiled roof. The complex consists of a lecture hall and a gate. The lecture hall is five bays across the front and one-and-a-half bays deep, with a single-eaved gabled roof and wind boards (pungpan, boards fitted to the gable ends against wind and rain) on both sides. Under the eaves hangs the outer shell of a large drum once used there. The gate has a gabled roof and is a solsatmun, raised higher than the flanking walls, and in the courtyard stand, side by side, memorial steles for the two brothers, erected by their descendants.
