Provincial Tangible Heritage

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis seated stone arhat (nahan), kept in the museum of Jikjisa Temple in Daehang-myeon, Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, is carved from granite. It is a modestly sized figure, 45 cm in height and 28 cm across the knees, traditionally said to have been the wonbul (a devotional image commissioned for personal prayer) of the Seon master Seoun. In the pose of gently taming a tiger, the figure displays a dignified bearing and a realistic manner of expression. Judging from its overall style, it is presumed to have been made during the reigns of King Injong (r. 1123–1146) and King Uijong (r. 1147–1170), at the height of Goryeo culture.
