Goheung Jeong Geol-ga Royal Patent Ryu Historical Documents
고흥정걸가교지류고문서 · 高興 丁傑家 敎旨類 古文書

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe thirty-four gyoji — royal patents issued in the king's name conferring rank or office — passed down in the Jeong Geol family of the Amhae Jeong clan in Goheung are valued as important material, since most of them are appointment patents (gosin-gyoji) spanning three generations: Jeong Geol, his son, and his grandson. They are especially valuable as a single set of documents from one military family covering the period before and after the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598), and in particular as the military appointment certificates left by three generations of a family from Heungyang, the old name of Goheung, a maritime defence base of Jeolla Left Province. Songjeong Jeong Geol (1514–1597) passed the military service examination in 1544 and was a military officer from Heungyang, Jeolla Province, who served as Naval Commander of Jeolla Left Province fifteen years before the Japanese invasions of Korea.
