Hyesanseowon Confucian Academy, Miryang
밀양 혜산서원 · 密陽 惠山書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Confucian academy honouring the Five Worthies of the Iljik Son clan, who have lived for generations in Jukseo Village, Dajuk-ri, Sanoe-myeon; the site originally held Seosanseowon, the academy dedicated to Son Jo-seo (pen name Gyeokjae, 1412–?), founded in 1753, the twenty-ninth year of King Yeongjo. Gyeokjae, indignant at the tyranny of King Sejo, who had usurped the throne from King Danjong in the early Joseon period, resigned his post and returned to his hometown, where, holding fast to loyalty and lofty integrity, he shut himself away from the world and devoted himself entirely to Confucian learning. Later generations of scholars came to revere him and built an academy in his honour, but it was demolished under the 1868 order — issued in the fifth year of Emperor Gojong — to abolish Confucian academies; afterwards the house was given the name plaques "Seosan Gotaek" (Old House of Seosan) and "Cheorunjae." In 1971 the grounds of the academy were expanded and reorganised, and the academies dedicated to five renowned worthies of the Iljik Son clan, until then scattered across different regions — Tayangseowon in Andong for Son Hong-nyang (posthumous title Jeongpyeong, 1287–1379), Seosanseowon in Miryang for Son Jo-seo (pen name Gyeokjae, 1412–?), Cheongho Seowon in Daegu for Son Cheo-nul (pen name Modang, 1553–1634), Bongsanseowon in Daegu for Son Rin (pen name Muntan, 1566–1628), and Ibamseowon in Yeongcheon for Son U-nam (pen name Ryunam, 1564–1623) — were relocated to this site, the clan's ancestral seat, and re-established; the rebuilt academy was given the name Hyesanseowon. The academy stands on a site of about 1,300 pyeong (roughly 4,300 m²) and comprises thirteen buildings within its grounds, including a shrine, a lecture hall, east and west dormitories, Sangnyemun Gate, Sinmun Gate, an inner gate, Jeonsadang Hall, a shrine housing a memorial stele, Dawon Seodang (a study hall), Iijeong Pavilion, a storehouse, and the main gate.
