Three Bodhisattvas Painting of Heungguksa Temple, Yeosu
여수 흥국사 삼장보살도 · 麗水 興國寺 三藏菩薩圖

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Three Bodhisattvas Painting of Heungguksa Temple, Yeosu, dates from 1741 and, apart from a sixteenth-century work preserved in Japan (a 1550 work held by Shin-Hasedera Temple in Aichi Prefecture, among others), is one of the earliest such paintings surviving in Korea. During the first half of the eighteenth century, Heungguksa Temple underwent a large-scale renovation and, in the course of this, commissioned the leading Buddhist painter-monk Uigyeom to produce many Buddhist paintings. The Three Bodhisattvas Painting dates from this period, and its overall colouring, pictorial composition and depiction of the various figures appear to capture something of the flourishing state of Heungguksa Temple at the time. The Three Bodhisattvas Painting of Heungguksa Temple is both early in date and outstanding in quality. The painter-monks who took part in its production were also disciples of Uigyeom, the leading painter-monk of the early eighteenth century. It is, moreover, in good condition.
