According to the Daeseungsa Temple Sajeok, a record of the temple's history, Yunpiram Hermitage of Daeseungsa Temple was founded in 1380, the sixth year of King U of Goryeo, by the Great Master Gakgwan. Because this small wooden Buddha statue is covered in gold paint, its original appearance is difficult to make out. The face is oval in shape, differing from the style of Buddhist statues of the late Joseon period, and the neck bears three clearly marked folds. The robe, which covers both shoulders, is rendered in a relatively simple manner. The statue was enshrined within a black jigam, a small shrine cabinet elaborately made of thick hanji (traditional mulberry paper) in the shape of a miniature Buddha hall built to house the image; this jigam appears to have been made after the statue itself.
