KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The Vulture Peak Assembly Painting of Geungnakjeon Hall at Jungnimsa Temple, Naju depicts the Buddha Shakyamuni preaching on Vulture Peak. In a tall, vertical composition, the large seated figure of the Buddha on a lotus pedestal fills the centre, surrounded by the bodhisattvas Manjushri, Samantabhadra, Maitreya and Dharmodgata; the Ten Great Disciples; Brahma; Indra; the Four Heavenly Kings; the dragon king and his daughter; and gandharvas and kinnaras. The painting dates to the mid-eighteenth century. Although the areas of green pigment, such as in the halo, are somewhat damaged, the overall colouring and composition are a fine example that well illustrates the characteristics of Buddhist paintings from the Jeolla region in the eighteenth century.
