This is a set of documents recommending the filial conduct of Gang Ui-yeong to various institutions. His record of filial piety relates that, while nursing his mother, of the Jo clan, who was over ninety and gravely ill, he was distressed that a hundred remedies had no effect. On hearing that human flesh was said to be efficacious, he cut flesh from his own thigh, boiled it, and gave it to her, thereby reviving his aged mother, so that people called it filial piety transcending the ordinary. The gyoji, a royal certificate, dates from the first month of the fourteenth year of King Heonjong (1848) and confers the title of sukbuin on the filial son Gang Ui-yeong's aged mother, of the Jo clan of Haman. The Hyohaengsarimchugeojang, a petition recommending filial conduct submitted by local scholars, is a document in which thirty-one men, including Yi Du-jin of Yongam-myeon, Uiryeong, recommended to the magistrate of Uiryeong, in the twelfth month of King Heonjong's fourteenth year (1848), the filial act of cutting flesh from his thigh to nourish his mother. The Uibaeksigyukseojang is a document that the filial son Gang Ui-yeong submitted to the magistrate of Uiryeong in order to obtain, for his aged mother of the Jo clan, the special grant of uibaeksigyuk. The system of uibaeksigyuk, the bestowal of beef and silk clothing on the elderly, was one of the policies of the time for honouring the aged, and one of the Joseon dynasty's measures for respecting elders. These documents are valued as important material clearly showing Joseon-period attitudes towards respect for the elderly and filial conduct.
