Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Bulseoljangsumyeoljoehojedongjagyeong Sutra, on the Buddha's teaching for prolonging life, eliminating sin and protecting all children, was translated by the monk Buddhapāli of Tang China. It records the Buddha's teaching on how, through the grace of the buddhas and bodhisattvas and through spiritual practice, all sin can be eliminated and long life attained. According to the colophon at the end, the sutra was printed to pray for the boundless good fortune and long life of Choe I, Duke of Jinyang, who held dominant power at the Goryeo court during the reign of Emperor Gojong. The colophon also states that it was carved in the first month of the sinchuk year, confirming the date as the first month of 1241. The title and opening section of the sutra are partly damaged, but overall its condition is good. The cover is made of thick jangji paper, and the title label appears to have been added at a later date; part of the beginning of the volume was damaged and has since been restored. It survives as a single volume in one folding album, with single ruled lines along the top and bottom margins; each printed block measures 22.5 by 51.5 cm and is folded into five panels, making a total of 22 blocks and 110 folios. The text has no ruled lines between columns, five lines of seventeen characters per folio, with interlinear notes in smaller double columns, and no fish-tail fold mark. The whole album measures 29.5 by 1,527.5 cm. The Bulseoljangsumyeoljoehojedongjagyeong is a valuable source not only for the study of Buddhism but also for research into the woodblock printing technology of the late Goryeo period and Korean bibliography.
