This is a piece of writing recording a journey to Geumgangsan Mountain made in 1603, the thirty-seventh year of King Seonjo, by Yi Gwang-jun, the governor of Gangwon Province, together with his friends. Geumgangsan Mountain was regarded almost as an obligatory pilgrimage site for any literatus, so much so that scholars longed to climb it. Three surviving copies of the Yu Geumgangsan Mountain Gwon are known today, held respectively by the descendants of Yi Gwang-jun; the descendants of Song Se-bin, son-in-law of Min-hwan, Yi Gwang-jun's third son; and the household of Do Jong-hyeon, a collector of old paintings and calligraphy in Busan. This particular copy is the one handed down among the descendants of Yi Gwang-jun, and was produced sometime between 1603 and 1735, the eleventh year of King Yeongjo. Besides the travel account itself, it is accompanied by an appreciative note composed by Yi Ho-min and written out by Han Seok-bong, an ink-bamboo painting by Yi Jeong, and an appreciative note by Yi Ik. By contrast, the copies held by the descendants of Song Se-bin and by Do Jong-hyeon consist only of the travel account and the note composed by Yi Ho-min and written by Han Seok-bong. Many travel accounts of Geumgangsan Mountain have been produced, but this work is significant for recording a precise date and for being a complete work combining writing, calligraphy and painting. It is all the more important in that its author, transcriber and painter-calligraphers were all noted figures of their time, and its transmission and circumstances are documented in detail.
