This is a standing stone Buddha enshrined in the main hall of Borimsa Temple in Hamyang-eup, Hamyang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. It was originally found near the site of the old Yongsansa Temple and kept in a private house, before being moved to Borimsa Temple in the early 1990s. The face is full and plump, with three distinct folds (samdo) clearly marked on the neck, and the robe draped over both shoulders is rendered with thick folds reaching down the body. The hands are shown in the earth-touching gesture (hangma chokjiin), signifying the subduing of evil spirits in the earth, and it is notable that the fingers are spread with visible force. Although the body as a whole is full and rounded, the figure is short in stature with narrow shoulders, and the feet are rendered somewhat awkwardly. In particular, the hand gesture suggests the influence of Esoteric Buddhism (milgyo: teachings, scriptures and mantras that cannot be explained through ordinary Buddhist doctrine).
