Standing Hamyang Daedeok-ri Rock-carved Buddha
함양대덕리마애여래입상 · 咸陽大德里磨崖如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Buddha image carved into a rock face in Meaari-gol Valley, Daedeok-ri, Hamyang-eup, Hamyang County, Gyeongsangnam-do, a site also known as "Bucheo-gol" (Buddha Valley). Judging from the surrounding environment, the site is presumed to be the location of a former temple, though no records survive. The overall outline is rendered in fine lines. Above the bare head, a topknot-shaped usnisa is clearly formed, and the round face gives a gentle impression. On the neck are carved three curved lines, the samdo traditionally symbolising the three realms of existence, and the robe covering both shoulders forms U-shaped folds below the chest. Both hands form the mudra of Amitabha Buddha, with the thumb and index finger of each hand touching, and the pedestal is carved with lotus petals that are simple yet lively in expression.
