These are woodblocks carved with the collected writings of Jeong On (pen name Donggye, 1569–1641), an eminent official of the mid-Joseon period. Jeong On passed the civil service examination in 1610, the second year of King Gwanghaegun, and held posts such as Lecturer at the Crown Prince Tutoring Office and Third Inspector at the Office of the Censor-General. When Grand Prince Yeongchang was put to death, Jeong On submitted a fierce memorial of protest, which incurred King Gwanghaegun's wrath, and he was exiled to Jeju Island, where he devoted himself to scholarship for the following ten years. He later returned to office and held important posts such as Inspector-General, Chief Academician and Second Minister of Personnel. When Joseon finally surrendered during the Manchu invasion of 1636, he attempted to take his own life but failed, and thereafter lived out his days on Deogyusan Mountain until his death. After his death, his integrity was highly esteemed: he was posthumously honoured as Chief State Councillor during the reign of King Sukjong, his spirit tablet was enshrined in several seowon, and he was given the posthumous title 'Mungan'. These woodblocks were first printed in 1660, the first year of King Hyeonjong, and reprinted in 1851, the second year of King Cheoljong. They measure 54 cm wide, 29 cm long and 2.5 cm thick.
