Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an ancestral hall (jaesa) built to protect and hold memorial rites at the grave altar of Bogyagong of the Andong Gwon clan and the grave of Gwon In, founding ancestor of the Panseogong branch. Gwon In, founder of the Panseogong branch of the Andong Gwon clan, lived at the turn from the late Goryeo to the early Joseon period. Songpajaesa faces south-east against a backdrop of low hills, looking out onto the Songyacheon stream in front. The outer gate quarters at the very front form a "mouth" (口)-shaped layout, with one bay projecting at each end. Passing through the main gate, the courtyard occupies the centre, with the east and west wing quarters arranged to either side and the main quarters standing opposite. In the gate quarters, the main gate occupies the central bay; to its left are, in order, a heated room (ondol), a rice-chest room and a cattle shed, and to its right a heated room and a storeroom. At the left and right ends of the gate quarters, a cattle shed and a storeroom each project by one bay. The main quarters has a broad wooden-floored hall (daecheong) at its centre; the west wing contains a heated room, a study and a passage room, while the east wing contains a heated room, an east chamber and a kitchen. This jaesa began as an eight-bay tile-roofed house bought for the purpose in 1743, the nineteenth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon; four more bays of thatched building were added in 1746, the twenty-second year of King Yeongjo; and, finding this still too small, it was rebuilt into its present form in 1748, the twenty-fourth year of King Yeongjo. It retains its original appearance well, with no major change to the floor plan or structural style since that 1748 reconstruction. In particular, the paired lattice windows (yeongssangchang) fitted in the main hall and the study are a window style found mainly in buildings of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, making them a valuable style for gauging the building's date of construction.
