Dongwonseongnyang Stele, Boseong
보성 동원석량비 · 寶城 東院石梁碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Dongwonseongnyang Stele, Boseong (寶城 東院石梁碑) commemorates the building of a stone bridge erected in the intercalary fourth month of 1686, during the Joseon period, across the stream in front of Dongwon, near Boseong-eup. The front of the stele records the process by which the bridge was built, and the back lists the names of those who took part. The bridge was conceived at the start of the first lunar month of 1685 by the monk Gyesu of Gaeheungsa Temple, Boseong, who wished to give local people a safe crossing between Boseong-eup and the area outside the town wall. He led the project, gathering donations from local residents, had stone quarried from Obongsan Mountain, and had it transported with the help of the county magistrate Park Rip before the bridge was completed. The stele is made up of a dragon-carved capstone (isu), a body (bisin) and a base (bijwa). It is a rare surviving seventeenth-century record relating to a bridge, recording in detail the date of construction, who initiated it, the background and process of building, and how the funds were raised, and it remains in good condition.
