Standing Stone Avalokitesvara of Seongjusa Temple, Changwon
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This bodhisattva image, 148 cm in total height, is enshrined in Yonghwajeon Hall at Seongjusa Temple in Cheonseon-dong, Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do; the body, halo and pedestal are all carved from granite. Avalokitesvara is the most widely venerated of bodhisattvas, believed to rescue sentient beings from hardship simply upon the invocation of his name. The figure wears an elaborately decorated crown on a bare head, has a full, gentle face, and bears a carved necklace at the neck. The rounded shoulders and the U-shaped drapery folds, carved in thick curves, lend a soft impression, but the lower body is short in proportion to the upper body, so that the figure loses its sense of balance. Judging from the overall carving technique, the statue is thought to have been made during the Goryeo dynasty.
