Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele, known as the Gwanwangmyo Stele on Gogeumdo Island, Wando, stands at the Gwanwangmyo, a shrine dedicated to Guan Yu, the Chinese general deified as a god of war. It was designated a Jeollanam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage on 19 April 2018, and measures 253 cm in height and 93 cm in width. It dates from the Joseon dynasty, having been erected in 1713, the 39th year of King Sukjong. The inscription was composed by Yi I-myeong and its calligraphy written by Yi U-hang. The stele is an important source revealing the period, background and subsequent maintenance of the Gwanwangmyo shrine, and, as a record of the achievements of Admiral Yi Sun-sin and General Chen Lin, who led the war effort to victory during the Jeongyu War of 1597 (the second Japanese invasion of Korea), it holds significant historical and academic value.
