Master Chwisudang O Yeon (1598-1669), whose courtesy name was Deogwon and who was also known by the sobriquet Dunjae, held the junior sixth-rank post of Chungmuwi Busagwa and was later granted the honorary senior second-rank post of Tonghun-daebu Sabok-si-jeong. Around 1650 he built this two-storey pavilion in a place called Jopigol, with a hipped-and-gabled roof, three bays across the front and two bays deep. Master Chwisudang O Yeon was born the third son of Munwoldang O Geuk-seong (1559-1617), who was named a Meritorious Subject of the Imjin Seonmu Wonjong for his service during the Imjin War. During the Byeongja War he fought in the Battle of Ssangnyeong and distinguished himself in combat, but on hearing the sorrowful news that the king of Joseon had surrendered to the Qing emperor Taizong at Namhansanseong Fortress, he was disheartened and retired to Daecheon-ri in Yeongyang. The building stands on round columns set on natural stone bases; to the west is a raised wooden-floored hall named Mangseoru ("Pavilion for Gazing West"), and to the east an ondol, or heated-floor, room named Dunjae ("Hermit's Study"). A narrow veranda runs along the front of the Dunjae room, and a balustraded terrace is set in front of Mangseoru. There survives a record of repair by Mangok Jo Sul-do (1729-1803), recording that the pavilion was repaired together with the ancestral shrine in 1799, the 23rd year of King Jeongjo of Joseon. To the west of the pavilion stands the Samyeongdae stone, inscribed with a date corresponding to the fourth month of 1801, and to the east stands the Daemyeongdong stone monument. Engraved poem boards by Changseok Yi Jun, Pyoeun Kim Si-on, Seokgye Yi Si-myeong and Seongmun Jeong Yeong-bang are displayed on the walls of the pavilion, and the Chwisudang Ilgo, a surviving two-volume, one-book collection of the master's writings, has been passed down.
