Eunhaesa Temple Geungnakbojeon Hall Altar Painting and Samjang Buddhist Painting
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

These are an altar painting (a painting hung behind the main Buddha image) and a Samjang Buddhist painting kept in Daeungjeon Hall of Eunhaesa Temple; a taenghwa is a Buddhist painting made by painting on cloth or paper and mounting it as a framed picture or hanging scroll. The altar painting is an Amitabha Triad, depicting Amitabha Buddha at the centre flanked only by two attendant bodhisattvas, painted on a ground of fine hemp cloth backed with several layers of paper. Brown and green clouds are set against an indigo sky, and the Buddha and bodhisattvas are rendered mainly in red and green, giving a somewhat heavy impression while showing refined brushwork. According to the inscription at the bottom of the painting, it was produced in 1750, the twenty-sixth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, by court painters including Bochong and Cheo-il. It was made at the same time and by the same painters as the Hanging Painting of Eunhaesa Temple (Treasure No. 1270), kept at the same location, and is regarded as important material for the study of Buddhist painting. The Samjang Buddhist painting is painted on a ground made by joining five panels of fine hemp cloth backed with several layers of paper, showing the three great bodhisattvas — Cheonjang Bodhisattva at the centre, Jijang (Ksitigarbha) Bodhisattva on the left and Jiji Bodhisattva on the right — surrounded by their attendants and retinues. In date and artistic quality it resembles the altar painting. According to its inscription, it was produced in 1755, the thirty-first year of King Yeongjo, by twelve painters including Sang-o, Gwallyeong, Seongcheong and Seongjing. Korean Samjang Buddhist paintings were made mainly from the late sixteenth century to the Qianlong era (1736–1795), and this work is a representative example of that period.
