Jinjucheonggoksa Temple Vulture Peak Assembly Painting
진주청곡사영산회상도 · 晉州靑谷寺靈山會上圖

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYeongsanhoesang, the Vulture Peak Assembly, refers to the gathering at which Shakyamuni preached the Lotus Sutra on Vulture Peak in India; over time the term came to mean Shakyamuni's preaching itself. This painting is a concrete expression of the fervent wish to bring the Vulture Peak Assembly into being on this earth. A Vulture Peak Assembly painting is usually enshrined behind the Buddha image in a Daeungjeon or Yeongsanjeon hall, and generally depicts Shakyamuni at the centre flanked by two, four, six or eight great bodhisattvas, the ten great disciples, and guardian deities who protect the Dharma. Made as the altar painting behind the main Buddha of Cheonggoksa Temple's Daeungjeon Hall, this Vulture Peak Assembly painting measures 410 cm in length and 273 cm in width. It is a large-scale work centred on Shakyamuni Buddha in the earth-touching gesture, surrounded by the Ten Kings who preside over the underworld. Brilliantly coloured on a silk ground, it was made in 1750, the twenty-sixth year of King Yeongjo, and is a rare Buddhist painting both in its content and in its scale.
