Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Jinjuuiam Hermitage Memorial Stele records the story of Nongae who, after Jinjuseong Fortress fell on 29 June 1593, the 26th year of King Seonjo, during the second Battle of Jinju in the Japanese invasions of Korea, and seventy thousand troops and civilians died defending their country, embraced an enemy general and gave her own life to avenge the nation's defeat. The literati and commoners of Jinju erected the stele in 1722, the second year of King Gyeongjong, using an inscription composed by Jeong Sik, pen name Myeongam (1683–1746). In 1740, the sixteenth year of King Yeongjo, the military commander Nam Deok-ha (1688–1742) petitioned the court for the official commendation of the righteous gisaeng and founded Uigisa Shrine, the Shrine of the Righteous Gisaeng; at the memorial stele a stele pavilion was also built, displaying a plaque reading "Gate of the Righteous Gisaeng Nongae." This stele faces the rock known as Uiam, the Righteous Rock (Gyeongsangnam-do Monument No. 235), below, deepening admiration for the patriotic spirit of the righteous gisaeng Nongae. The stele's inscription bears a poem: "That rock stands alone; that woman stood tall. Without this rock, where would the woman have found her place to die? Without this woman, how would the rock have gained its righteous renown? On the high rock of the Namgang River, her fragrant name will be handed down for all ages."
