This nectar ritual painting (gamnotaenghwa), a genre that flourished widely in combination with the ideal of filial piety, is a Buddhist painting made to secure the rebirth of ancestors in paradise; it expresses the fervent wish that, through the most attentive service to the Buddha, the souls of ancestors might be delivered from the realm of hell. The painting is composed in three broad sections. At the very top are depicted Buddhas and bodhisattvas; in the middle is a table laden with offerings of many kinds of food presented to the Buddha; and below this are depicted hungry ghosts (agwi) suffering from an inability to eat, together with scenes of hell, figures fighting one another, figures bound to torture frames, itinerant entertainers performing, figures fleeing from tigers, and other such scenes depicting the various fates that human beings undergo according to their karma.
