Goseong Unheungsa Temple Bhaisajyaguru Buddha Assembly Painting
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a Buddhist assembly painting (bulhoedo) depicting Bhaisajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha, who is said to save sentient beings from the suffering of all illness, heal them, and lead them to enlightenment. The Medicine Buddha, holding a medicine bowl in his left hand, is placed large at the centre; around him, the Eight Kinds of Divine Beings are painted at the very top, and below them bodhisattvas wearing ornate crowns. At the very bottom of the painting, two of the Four Heavenly Kings, guardians of the Buddhist teachings, are placed on each side. Seated on a lotus pedestal, the Medicine Buddha wears robes covering both shoulders and sits in the auspicious posture (gilsangjwa), with the right foot resting on the left knee, set against a large winnow-shaped halo.
