Seated Gumi Yaksaam Hermitage Stone Buddha
구미약사암석조여래좌상 · 龜尾藥師庵石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the principal Buddha image enshrined in the Daeungjeon Hall of Yaksaam Hermitage, a traditional temple located at the summit of Geumosan Mountain. This stone Buddha statue is presumed to have been made in the late Silla or early Goryeo period; although it has been thickly gilded, its material appears to be granite. Photographs from the 1960s, taken before the gilding, show it to be a complete Sakyamuni Buddha image with a serene, full countenance. It is regarded as valuable material for the study of stone Buddha statues in the Yeongnam region. According to the Yaksaam jungsugi (Record of the Restoration of Yaksaam), it is said to be one of three stone Buddha statues originally located on Jirisan Mountain, known as the 'Three Brother Buddhas'. Of the other two, one is said to have been enshrined at Samseongam Hermitage of Jikjisa Temple in Gimcheon, and the other at Sudoam Hermitage in Seongju. The information panel for the Seated Stone Buddha of Yakgwangjeon Hall at Sudoam Hermitage, Treasure No. 296, introduces a legend that this stone Buddha, together with the stone Buddha at Yaksaam Hermitage on Geumosan Mountain and the stone Buddha of Yaksajeon Hall at Jikjisa Temple, forms a set of three brothers, and that when one of the three yawns, the other two sneeze in response.
