This painting, preserved at Tongdosa Temple, depicts together Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva — who, entrusted by the Buddha Sakyamuni, guides and saves the beings of the six realms of existence from the time of the Buddha's death until the appearance of Maitreya Buddha — and the Ten Kings, the judges of the underworld. A taenghwa is a Buddhist painting made on cloth or paper and mounted as a framed picture or hanging scroll for use in ceremonies. Painted in colour on a silk ground, this Ten Kings painting places the seated image of Ksitigarbha at the centre, flanked by the halo-bearing Monk Domyeong and King Mudokgwi, together with the Ten Kings, court officials, child attendants and prison guards. An inscription at the bottom centre of the painting records that it was made in the twelfth year of King Sunjo of Joseon (1812). It is an important scholarly resource for the study of the history of Joseon-period Buddhist painting.
