The artefacts held by the Bak Seung-im lineage relate to Bak Seung-im and his son and their descendants, who lived through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They comprise old documents such as royal edicts, property-division records, and household registers, together with the printing woodblocks of the Sogo Munjip, his collected writings, and a horn belt. Among the old documents are seventeen sheets of royal edicts and official appointment certificates issued to Bak Seung-im and others, three property-division records, twenty-two household registers, one state-examination paper, two pieces of calligraphy by earlier sages, and two drawings. Bak Seung-im's ancestral seat was Bannam, and his pen name was Sogo. He studied under Toegye, passed the regular civil service examination in 1540, the thirty-fifth year of King Jungjong, and went on to hold a succession of prestigious 'clear official' posts at the Seungmunwon, Yemungwan, Seungjeongwon and Hongmungwan; in 1569, the second year of King Seonjo, he travelled to Ming China as a deputy envoy. Skilled in poetry and prose, he devoted himself from middle age onward to the Neo-Confucian study of the mind. His writings include the Seongni Yuseon, Gongmun Simbeop Yuchwi, Gangmok Simbeop, and Sogo Munjip. Bak Seung-im's son, Bak Rok (1542-1632), known by his pen name Chwisuheon, was so widely trusted that he was proposed as a righteous-army commander during the Japanese invasions of Korea. In 1594 he was appointed Custodian of Taereung Royal Tomb, and subsequently served as an official of the Uigeumbu, the Royal Investigation Bureau.
