양산 통도사 극락회상탱 · 通度寺阿彌陀極樂會上幀

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an Amitabha Assembly of the Pure Land painting preserved at Tongdosa Temple. A taenghwa, the general term for such works, is a Buddhist painting made on cloth or paper and mounted as a hanging scroll or framed picture. Painted in colour on a silk ground, it shows the Buddha Amitabha seated on a high pedestal at the centre, with attendant bodhisattvas positioned before the pedestal and the Four Heavenly Kings arranged two to each side. To either side of the principal Buddha are the Eight Great Bodhisattvas, each with a halo, together with their attendant retinues. At the lower edge of the painting is an inscription recording details of its production, written in ink, but flaking of the paint means it can now only be partly read. As a work of late Joseon-period (eighteenth-century) Buddhist painting it is an outstanding example, and it is valued as important material for the study of the history of Joseon Buddhist painting.
