Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIn the 39th year of King Jungjong (1544), Sin Jam, magistrate of Sangju and a grandson of Sin Suk-ju, founded Geunam Seodang, a village school, in Sanbuk-myeon, Mungyeong, then under the jurisdiction of the Sangju magistracy. Later, by consensus of the local Confucian community, a shrine was built to commemorate the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Hong Eon-chung and Yi Deok-hyeong, and it was named Geunamseowon. In 1693, Kim Hong-min and Hong Yeo-ha were additionally enshrined there. In the 10th year of King Hyeonjong (1669), Geunam Seodang was formally elevated to Geunamseowon, and in the 10th year of King Jeongjo (1786), Yi Gu, Yi Man-bu and Gwon Sang-il were further enshrined, bringing the number of sages honoured there to seven in all. These artefacts held at Geunamseowon were designated a Gyeongsangbuk-do tangible cultural heritage in January 2006. Among the enshrined figures, most of the items are the printing woodblocks for the collected works of Mokjae Hong Yeo-ha, Uam Hong Eon-chung and Cheongdae Gwon Sang-il, along with some seventy items of royal appointment certificates, commissions and other documents belonging to Cheongdae Gwon Sang-il. There are also many books and records that Cheongdae collected over his lifetime, among which Toegye's autograph writings, the Cheongdae collected works, and royal writings and calligraphy are especially valuable historical materials. Some of these are held on deposit at the Hanguk Gukhak Jinheungwon (Korea Studies Advancement Institute) in Andong, while the collected-works volumes remain in the keeping of Cheongdae's descendants.
