The Lotus Sutra, also known as the Beophwagyeong, was the fundamental scripture of the Cheontae (Tiantai) school and remains one of the core scriptures of Korean Buddhism today. It circulated widely from the Three Kingdoms period onward; during the Goryeo period it was actively copied and printed, and printing continued steadily through the Joseon period. Rather than being intended chiefly for recitation, it was mainly printed to generate merit for the donors who sponsored it, in keeping with devotion to the sutra itself. This copy of the Lotus Sutra was printed at Hwaamsa Temple on Mount Gosan in the 8th year of King Seongjong (1477), giving it a clear date of printing, and it survives as a complete set. Judging from its calligraphic style, layout and the carving of the printing blocks, it is presumed to be an edition printed before the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–98).
