Geollyung18nyeon Cheollyongdo Painting of Yongchusa Temple, Hamyang
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This painting is preserved at Yongchusa Temple, Hamyang; it is a taenghwa—a Buddhist painting made on cloth or paper and mounted as a panel or hanging scroll—depicting Cheollyong, a guardian deity of Buddhism. Painted in colour on ramie cloth, this Cheollyong painting shows, within a wide horizontal rectangular field, Cheollyong standing with hands joined at the centre, flanked on either side by three attendant figures. An inscription in the lower part of the painting records that it was made in the 18th year of the Geollyung (Qianlong) reign era, that is, the 22nd year of King Yeongjo of Joseon (1753), with the participation of the master painter-monks (geumeo) Gwandong, Yutaek, Junhaeng and others. The Yongchusa Inscribed "Geollyung 18th Year" Cheollyong Painting is a Cheollyong painting whose iconography survives clearly and distinctly; as a work involving the master painter-monks Gwandong, Yutaek and Junhaeng, it is an important scholarly resource for the study of guardian-deity (sinjang) paintings of the late Joseon period.
