Yecheon Seoaksa Temple Shakyamuni Altar Painting
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr · no licence stated

This altar painting behind the Buddha statue depicts a seated Shakyamuni Buddha at the centre, flanked by Manjusri Bodhisattva on the right and Samantabhadra Bodhisattva on the left. Above Manjusri and Samantabhadra a broad ribbon-like band, called a pungdae, is depicted, and the Four Heavenly Kings are arranged within a round circle - a form rarely found in other Buddhist paintings, making this work notable. The inscription also records the date of production, 1770 (the 35th year of the Qianlong era), and the name of the geumeo, the chief monk-painter who led the work. Given the orderly arrangement and composition of the figures and the stable colouring, this painting is judged to be a valuable resource for research on 18th-century Buddhist paintings.
