This is a collection of old documents relating to Yi Deok-hong (pen name Ganjae, 1541-1596), a leading disciple of Toegye, and his sons Yi Si and Yi Jeom, and his grandson Yi Yeong-gu, comprising manuscripts, royal certificates of appointment (gyoji), examination papers (sigwon), and deeds (myeongmun). Among the manuscripts, Garye Juseok (Commentary on the Family Rites), Ganjae Ganglok (Ganjae's Lecture Records), Ganjae Seonsaeng Munjip (Collected Works of Master Ganjae), Saseo Jirui (Questions on the Four Books), Simgyeong Jirui (Questions on the Classic of the Mind), Juyeok Jirui (Questions on the Book of Changes), Gyesan Giseonnok (Record of Good Deeds at Gyesan), and Ganjae Seonjo Yumuk (Ink Traces of Ganjae's Ancestors) were either first drafts or served as the source texts for compiling the Ganjae Sokjip (Sequel to the Collected Works of Ganjae). Yi Deok-hong began studying under Toegye at the age of nineteen. He was so accomplished in scholarship that Toegye entrusted him with organising his books on his deathbed, and he was especially well versed in the study of the Book of Changes. During the Japanese invasions (the Imjin War), he accompanied the crown prince in his retinue as far as Seongcheon. At that time, in a memorial to the throne, he set out in detail the use of the 'tortoise cart' (geobukgeo) for land warfare, and for naval warfare he drew up a design for a 'tortoise-shell ship' (gwigapseondo) and advised that it be put into actual use. On Toegye's orders he built an armillary sphere (honcheonui), and he also designed a mathematical chart (sanbeopdo).
