The Palsangjeon Hall Guardian Deities Painting of Ssanggyesa Temple is kept at Ssanggyesa Temple and is also known as the Jeseok Guardian Deities Painting of the Old Dharma Hall of Ssanggyesa Temple. Taking as its model the Guardian Deities Painting of Guksaam Hermitage at Ssanggyesa Temple, produced in 1781, this painting was made in the fourth month of the 14th year of King Jeongjo's reign (1790). The chief painter-monks Pyeongsam, Hongwon, Jisun and Geukchan, together with assistant painters including Chalmin and Yangsu, took part in its production. The painting is a tall rectangle (181.4 cm × 128 cm) made as a single panel from four widths of silk joined together. The painting has inscription panels set at the lower left and lower right of the composition. The robes of the guardian deity to the left of Witaecheon are coloured in vermilion and blue-green, while the robes of the guardian deity to the right are rendered, as with Witaecheon himself, with a thick application of white pigment so that the gold pigment stands out in relief. The figures are densely arranged with almost no empty space, and the surrounding area is decorated with yellow-green coloured clouds and elaborate patterns, giving an impression of intricacy. Produced in continuation of traditional iconography, this painting later became the standard iconographic model for guardian deity paintings in the Honam region. It was originally enshrined in the Palsangjeon Hall of Ssanggyesa Temple but is now held in the temple's Seongbo Museum, and it is in good condition.
