KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Following the path behind Geungnakjeon Hall of Wonhyoam Hermitage and climbing 200m north along a mountain trail, a large boulder about 4m high stands alone, jutting out from the slope. On its front (north-east-facing) surface a shallow, boat-shaped niche has been carved, within which sits a seated Buddha in half-relief, cross-legged in the full lotus position on a lotus-shaped pedestal. Behind the seated Buddha a halo is depicted, and the figure has a large usnisha (the raised protuberance on the crown of the head) and long ears, giving it well-balanced proportions. The robe covers both shoulders and drapes down over the knees. Judging from the carving technique, the work is considered to date from the Unified Silla period. The niche measures 158cm in height and 170cm in width at the base; the lotus pedestal is 128cm wide and 22cm high; and the seated Buddha itself is 110cm high.
