Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDodeogam Hermitage is said to have been founded in 435, the 18th year of King Nulji of Silla. In 968, the 19th year of King Gwangjong of Goryeo, National Preceptor Hyegeo renovated it and renamed it Chilseongam Hermitage. After suffering heavy damage during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598, Nahanjeon Hall was built there in 1632, the 10th year of King Injo. It was renovated again in 1653, the 4th year of King Hyojong, by Great Master Giseong, and once more in 1854, the 5th year of King Cheoljong, by Great Master Seonui, known by his hall name Monggyedang, who renamed it Dodeogam Hermitage, the name it has kept ever since. The Monggyedang Hall Master Seonui Portrait of Dodeogam Hermitage, Chilgok, depicts Great Master Seonui, who rebuilt Dodeogam Hermitage in 1854. An inscription at the bottom of the painting reads "the second year of Tongzhi (同治二年)", showing that it was made in 1863. In the painting, Seonui is shown wearing monastic robes and seated, holding a monk's staff in his left hand and a string of prayer beads in his right. The old monk's face and overall figure are rendered with relative skill, and because the date of production is precisely known, the work is valued as important material for the study of Joseon-period Buddhist painting. It is now kept at the Seongbo Museum of nearby Donghwasa Temple.
