This seated stone Buddha follows the basic style of seated Buddha images that came into fashion from the latter half of the 7th century, just after the unification of Silla, and continued to be produced throughout Silla and into the early Goryeo period. Judging from the hand gesture, in which it holds a medicine jar, it is a typical seated image of the Medicine Buddha. One distinctive feature is the shape of the medicine jar itself, which takes the rare form of a small, round earthenware jar fitted with a lid. Beyond this, the basic style can be summed up in two main points. First, in its dress, the robe covers both shoulders; although a thousand years of exposure to the elements have caused considerable wear, the lines of the robe flowing naturally along the shoulders are more than enough to convey the essence of Unified Silla Buddhist sculpture. Second, the right hand forms the gesture of dispelling fear, the posture of one who relieves the suffering of sentient beings; in this gesture one can vividly sense the form that the faith of ordinary people took as they longed for relief amid the unending cycle of war, drought and famine.
