Geumyangjeongsa was a place where Hwang Jun-ryang (1517–1563), pen name Geumgye, a civil official of the Joseon dynasty, pursued scholarship and taught. Hwang Jun-ryang was a disciple so valued by Yi Hwang that Yi Hwang himself wrote his haengjang (a record of a deceased person's lifetime achievements). Hwang Jun-ryang's courtesy name was Junggeo, his pen name Geumgye, and his clan seat Pyeonghae. After passing the state examination in 1540, the thirty-fifth year of King Jungjong, he served as a Doctor of the National Academy, as Assistant Section Chief of the Board of Taxation while concurrently serving as a Recording Officer of the Office of Annals, and as Magistrate of Seongju, and he also took part in compiling the veritable records of both King Jungjong and King Injong. The building has a heated (ondol) room on the left and a wooden-floored hall (daecheong) on the right, with narrow wooden verandas along the front and left side. Its floor plan retains the form of either its original construction in the mid-sixteenth century or its 1701 reconstruction, preserving the features of an old-style building. Its architectural style and floor plan well illustrate the type of architecture built by local literati and scholar-officials.
