The subject of this epitaph, Lady Jeongbuin of the Munhwa Ryu clan, was the wife of Jo Gye-mun, magistrate of Uljin, and the mother of Jo Wi, styled Maegye and posthumously honoured as Munjanggong. She died in 1495, the first year of King Yeonsangun, at the age of 69. Her son Jo Wi is said to have received the text of the epitaph from Hong Gwi-dal, engraved it himself, and buried it in front of her grave; it was found beneath the stone offering table during repairs to the grave site in 2001. Many epitaph tablets survive from the Joseon period, but stone examples like this one are relatively uncommon. It is also of an early date and in good condition.
