This rock-carved Buddha is located near the ninth ridge line of Jangyuksan Mountain, on the boundary between Gyeongju and Cheongdo County. It was carved as a line drawing on a flat, south-facing rock face, with no further shaping of the natural stone. The Buddha wears robes covering both shoulders and sits in the full lotus position with hands joined in the meditation mudra. It has a well-proportioned body and a large usnisha (the cranial protuberance marking enlightenment), and the three folds on the neck, a standard mark of a Buddha, are clearly shown. The shoulders form a gentle curve yet appear dignified, and there is a knotted sash across the chest. The statue stands 154 cm tall overall. Based on its overall character, it is thought to be a Joseon-period rock-carved Buddha; because its facial features are distinct and complete, it is a valuable resource for studying the rock-carved Buddhas of the Gyeongju and Cheongdo area. Close to the east of this statue is a large rock cave of about ten pyeong (roughly 33 square metres), where, according to legend, six generals once practised austerities; it is accordingly called Yukjanggul, the Cave of the Six Generals. The name of Jangyuksan Mountain is thought to derive from this legend.
