Jang Baek-son Royal Patent
장백손교지 · 張伯孫 敎旨

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are royal patents (gyoji) granted to Jang Baek-son over the course of his career as a military official: thirty-one documents in all, beginning with the letter of appointment (gosin) he received in 1490, the 21st year of King Seongjong of Joseon, when he was appointed Seollyakjanggun haeng Chungmuwi Udobusajik, and continuing until 1523, the 18th year of King Jungjong, when he was appointed to his final post of Eomojanggun haeng Owidochongbu-gyeongnyeok. Together they allow his official career to be traced in detail. All the patents are rectangular in shape and made of hanji, traditional Korean mulberry paper. Such a large group of documents surviving in good condition is rare in Korea, and their value is heightened both because they predate the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-1598) and because they set out the career of a military official so clearly. The documents are currently deposited and kept at the Korea Studies Advancement Center in Andong.
