Bulpae of Buryeongsa Temple, Uljin
울진 불영사 불패 · 蔚珍 佛影寺 佛牌

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krTwo bulpae — wooden tablets inscribed with the name of a Buddha or bodhisattva and used as objects of worship — stand in the Daeungbojeon Hall of Buryeongsa Temple. Bulpae 1 consists of a pedestal and a tablet body; on the front of the tablet body is written the phrase "may the rain and wind be timely, and the country prosperous and the people at peace" (originally in Korean script), and the frame is decorated all around with lavish patterns of a yellow dragon and clouds; it measures 71.8 cm in height by 40.5 cm in width. Bulpae 2 has lost its pedestal (now restored), leaving only the upward-facing lotus stand and the tablet body; no inscription can be made out in the central frame, and the surrounding area is lavishly decorated with a phoenix, clouds and flowers; it measures 34 cm in height by 24.2 cm in width. On the back of the tablet body of Bulpae 1 is a votive text written in ink recording the making of the tablets. According to this, three bulpae inscribed with the names of buddhas and bodhisattvas, and three jeonpae — tablets invoking the wellbeing of the royal house — were made together in 1678, the fourth year of King Sukjong of Joseon, though only two pieces survive today.
