Jeongdeokgyeyu Samabangmok (Roster of Licentiate Examination Passers)
정덕계유 사마방목 · 正德癸酉 司馬榜目

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAmong the surviving copies of Samabangmok (Roster of Licentiate Examination Passers) known to date, the oldest is one printed with Gabinja, a type of movable metal type, in the first year of King Yejong, the eighth king of Joseon (1469). This Gabinja edition no longer survives. The next oldest is this roster, printed with Eulhaeja, another type of movable metal type. An identical work, the Jeongdeokgyeyu Samabangmok, is currently held at Oksanseowon Confucian Academy and is designated Treasure No. 524, while the Jeongdeokgyeyu Munmujapgwabangmok, published in the same year, is held by Sim Gyo-man of Gangneung and is likewise designated Treasure No. 603. Of the rosters of saengwon (literary licentiate) and jinsa (classics licentiate) examination passers that survive in Korea today, close to 170 of the 229 such examinations held throughout the Joseon dynasty are represented by rosters circulating at home and abroad, but among these, rosters printed with movable metal type are extremely rare. This roster is, moreover, presumed to be the same edition as the one designated Treasure No. 524. In terms of both bibliography and historical value, it is regarded as important material for research into the history of printing, biographical studies, social history, roster studies, and the history of the state examination system in Joseon.
