Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe main hall (anchae) is a building with front and rear toechan (eaves-bays), five kan wide at the front and two kan deep at the side. Its platform is built of three to four courses of natural fieldstones, on which natural stones were laid as plinths to support the pillars; the pillars are all square posts with a slight entasis (min-heulim, a gentle inward taper). The floor is laid in the umullu, or well-frame, style, and the toemaru (narrow veranda floor) at the front of the room on the right is set at a slightly different height. The construction date is confirmed by the sangnyangmun (ridge-raising inscription) recorded on the jongdori (ridge purlin): the sarangchae (men's quarters) in 1838 and the anchae in 1840. Although the timber members are not large in cross-section, the building displays the style and framing techniques of late-Joseon residential architecture, such as the use of naturally shaped timber left largely as it was, and the application of front and rear toe-bays to both the anchae and the sarangchae. It is also of considerable academic value as an example of the residence of a yangban household that had branched off from its head family (jongga), and its good state of preservation adds further to its value.
