National Preceptor Naong was born in 1320, the seventh year of King Chungsuk of Goryeo, in Gasan-ri, Yeonghae-bu (present-day Singi-ri, Jangsu-myeon, Yeongdeok County), to his father A Seo-gu and his mother, a woman of the Jeong clan. At the age of twenty the Master went to Seon Master Yoyeon at Myojeogam Hermitage on Gongdeoksan Mountain, a hermitage of Daeseungsa Temple in Mungyeong, and there became a monk. He subsequently travelled from temple to temple before attaining enlightenment at Hoeamsa Temple in Yangju, Gyeonggi-do. Relics and remains connected with Seon Master Naong survive throughout Myojeogam Hermitage, the best known being Anjang Rock on Sabulsan Mountain and the portrait of Seon Master Naong. The inscription on the portrait of Venerable Naong enshrined at Myojeogam Hermitage, Daeseungsa Temple, shows that it was made in 1803. In the painting, Venerable Naong wears a kasaya, a Buddhist monastic robe, over a jangsam, a long inner robe, and sits cross-legged in profile, holding a staff in one hand and a string of prayer beads in the other. Behind the eminent monk stands an elaborately dragon-decorated bulja, a ceremonial fly-whisk, and the floor is clearly set apart from the wall behind. In the upper left of the painting is an inscription giving the honorific title of the subject, and at the very bottom is an inscription recording the date of production and the maker. A relatively large amount of gold has been used throughout, including on the large sash ring on the left shoulder of the robe, which is decorated in gold.
