Seated Gilt-bronze Buddha held at Daeseongsa Temple, Pohang
포항 대성사 소장 금동여래좌상 · 浦項 大聖寺 所藏 金銅如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a small seated gilt-bronze Buddha, 9.5 cm in height, said to be the wonbul — a Buddha image kept for personal devotion — of Master Samyeong. Seated in full lotus position on a lotus pedestal, the Buddha wears the outer robe draped over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder bare; the left hand forms the meditation mudra, while the right hand is lowered below the knee to form the earth-touching mudra. The pedestal is a double lotus seat, formed of an upward-facing tier and a downward-facing tier joined together, a style of Buddha image introduced from Lamaist, or Tibetan, Buddhism at the end of the Goryeo period, which allows the date of production to be estimated. Although small in scale, the image has a stable, well-balanced proportion, and its details — the fingernails, toes and lotus pedestal — are rendered with great precision. It is not only serene and well-formed in appearance but also complete, and its state of preservation is good.
